New Delhi, Aug 21: In the latest development in the Geetika Sharma's suicide case, the main accused Gopal Kanda's wife Saras Kanda broke her silence for the first time. During an interview with a daily, Mrs Kanda revealed that the former Haryana minister had "wept" for Geetika bitterly.
Defending her husband, Mrs Kanda said that both of them used to treat Geetika as their daughter and Mr Kanda was very upset when he heard about Geetika's suicide for the first time.
While giving the interview, Mrs Kanda has been quoted as saying, "My husband was about to leave for the office when he received a call from one of the staff members, informing him that Geetika had hanged herself. He started weeping and kept saying that there was some conspiracy behind Geetika's suicide."
Mrs Kanda also raised questions about Geetika's family members' accusations against Mr Kanda. She claimed that the two family members were very close to each other and visited many places including Shirdi together.
Putting Geetika's decision of rejoining MDLR as an instance, Mrs Kanda asked, "Had they found my husband to be an indecent man, they would not have sent their daughter. We could not have forced them for anything. They may say anything now but the fact is nothing wrong took place. She had not been there for a brief period; six years is a long time to judge someone."
Informing about their trip to Shirdi, Mrs Kanda said, "I had once gone to office and told Gopal that I wanted to visit Shirdi for my birthday. Geetika was also present there and mentioned that her parents also wanted to visit the temple. It was sheer coincidence that the trip was planned together. It was wonderful. We stayed for a night at Shirdi and then spent one night at a hotel in Mumbai before returning."
"I still cannot believe such allegations are being levelled against my husband. Geetika's mother used to say that when she would marry her off, Gopal would perform all the roles of a mama (maternal uncle)," added Mrs Kanda.
Her statements surfaced just after days of Kanda's arrest. Mr Gopal Kanda was on the run for almost eleven days and finally surrendered himself when Delhi High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea following a lookout notice against him.
Meanwhile, Delhi police claimed that they want to bring both Kanda and Aruna Chaddha face to face for joint questioning.
Recently, Geetika's autopsy report was released to the media. The report is believed to have claimed that Geetika was subjected to unnatural sex which could also be one of the reasons the ambitious woman chose to end her life.
Geetika was found hanging in her flat on Aug 5 and the suicide note in the premises had named Gopal Kanda and another MDLR employee Aruna Chaddha of causing her mental distress and cited as the reason for her decision to commit suicide.
